West Air: A Practical Guide to Chongqing's Chinese Low-Cost Carrier
West Air is a subsidiary of HNA Aviation founded in March 2007, among the first low-cost carriers in mainland China, well before the wave of low-cost airlines that arrived in the following decade. It operates a dual hub between Chongqing Jiangbei and Zhengzhou, with an entirely Airbus A320 fleet.
History and positioning
Having been born in 2007 places West Air among the pioneers of low-cost flying in mainland China, several years ahead of most domestic competitors. Despite the bankruptcy restructuring that involved the whole HNA group in the following years, the airline has continued to operate as a regional low-cost carrier in service.
The fleet
The fleet, entirely from the Airbus A319/A320/A321 family, numbers about 45-50 aircraft: a single-type choice consistent with the containment of maintenance and training costs typical of the low-cost model.
Routes and network
From the dual hub of Chongqing Jiangbei and Zhengzhou, the network comprises about 170 routes to some sixty Chinese cities, including Guangzhou, Shanghai, Shenzhen and Hefei, as well as a few international connections launched to Singapore and Phuket.
Fares and baggage
The fare model follows the unbundled scheme typical of low-cost carriers: baggage and seat selection are paid extras, and the main advantage is a lower base price than the large full-service carriers on the same routes in the central China catchment area.
West Air is a good option if you are passing through Chongqing or Zhengzhou on a domestic leg or to Southeast Asia, traveling light and looking for the lowest price. It is not suitable if you need a protected connection with another airline: like all low-cost carriers, it offers no interline agreements for automatic baggage transfer. The practical tip is to treat Chongqing and Zhengzhou as two distinct, non-interchangeable bases: it is the same airline, but connections between the two hubs are not designed to be smooth.
