Windrose Airlines: From Charter Tourism to Wet Lease After the Russian Invasion
Windrose Airlines is a private Ukrainian airline founded in 2003 and based in Kyiv, born as a charter carrier for leisure tourism to destinations such as Egypt and Turkey. The Russian invasion of February 2022 abruptly interrupted this business model, forcing the airline to reinvent itself almost completely.
The business before the war
Before 2022 Windrose operated mainly tourist charters for Ukrainian tour operators, a segment quite distinct from that of the country's big scheduled carriers and focused on the beach destinations most popular with Ukrainian travelers.
The conversion to wet lease since 2022
With the closure of Ukrainian airspace, the airline shifted its activity toward wet lease, renting aircraft with crew to other carriers, particularly in Africa, where it continues to operate with a fleet reduced to about three aircraft. It is a completely different model from the original one, designed to keep the company alive without being able to count on the Ukrainian market.
What to expect today
The airline's commercial management has repeatedly expressed the hope of being able to return to operating leisure flights as soon as conditions allow, but to date Windrose remains a niche operator in international wet lease rather than a charter carrier bookable by the Ukrainian public.
Windrose Airlines today is not a direct booking option for a Ukrainian traveler looking for a charter flight to a beach destination, a service the airline offered before 2022 and which remains suspended. It is relevant above all to the African aviation sector, where it operates aircraft on wet lease on behalf of other carriers. Those who follow industry news should treat a possible return to Ukrainian leisure flights as a concrete signal only when the airline announces actual routes and schedules, not mere statements of intent.
