Wizz Air Abu Dhabi: Why the Gulf Joint Venture Is About to Close
Wizz Air Abu Dhabi is a joint venture between the Hungarian low-cost carrier Wizz Air Holdings and Abu Dhabi investors, operating since January 2021 from Abu Dhabi International Airport with a fleet of Airbus A321neo and A321ceo aircraft. Unlike the other carriers on this list, the most relevant thing to know about this airline is not about routes or fares, but about its announced closure.
History and positioning
The project started with two A321neos based in Abu Dhabi, rising to six in the first six months of operation, with the aim of replicating in the Gulf the long-haul low-cost narrowbody model already used by Wizz Air in Europe. The Wizz Air group has, however, announced the closure of the Abu Dhabi joint venture, ending the attempt to take root in the region.
Why it stopped working
During 2025 the airline had to suspend several routes to Central and Eastern Europe, Central Asia and the Caucasus, areas where airspace restrictions linked to the Russia-Ukraine conflict made many links too long or too expensive to operate profitably on narrowbodies. The model, designed for medium-to-long-haul routes with single-aisle aircraft, proved unsustainable precisely on the routes where the Gulf's geography made it most suitable.
Routes still active
Before the closure announcement, the network still included links to Astana, Beirut and Gabala with A321neo and A321ceo aircraft, as well as the launch planned for July 2025 of a service to Assiut, Egypt: a last phase of expansion that came just as the decision to close the base was already under discussion.
Wizz Air Abu Dhabi is not an airline on which to confidently plan a flight over the long term today, given the group's announcement that the joint venture will close. Those who already have a ticket booked on a route operated by this carrier should check the flight status directly with the airline before departure, rather than expecting the published schedule to stay unchanged. For future links to the same destinations, it is best to look right away at the alternatives offered by Etihad or other carriers in the region.
