Auckland Airport is in Mangere, about 21 km south of the city centre: by taxi or rideshare the transfer takes 30-45 minutes and costs 60-80 New Zealand dollars, while the AirportLink bus connects the terminals to the centre in about 45-50 minutes for 6.50 dollars per person (the old SkyBus Express service is no longer running). For those staying more than one night the centre is almost always the better choice, with the Viaduct Harbour waterfront and Queen Street within walking distance of the hotels. Frequently asked questions

Q. What happened to the old SkyBus?

It was replaced by the SkyDrive service, which connects the airport to central Auckland with the same purpose under a new brand, running from 5:00 to 22:30 every day.

Q. Is the shared shuttle or the taxi better?

The shared shuttle (35 NZD for the first person, +8 NZD per extra person) is generally cheaper than a taxi (38-105 NZD, typically 60-75 NZD at a fixed rate) while offering door-to-door service; the airport also applies a surcharge of 5.50 NZD for pick-up and 3.50 NZD for drop-off, included in the fixed fares.

Q. Do you need an NZeTA to enter New Zealand?

Yes, the electronic authorisation is mandatory for visa-exempt visitors and must be requested online before departure, along with payment of the tourist tax.

Q. What must you declare at customs on arrival in Auckland?

New Zealand applies some of the strictest biosecurity checks in the world: food, products of animal or plant origin, used trekking or camping gear, and even shoe soles must be declared on the customs form, or risk hefty fines even for unintentional oversights.
