How to get to Kansai International Airport

Osaka is about 40 km from the airport, Kyoto about 90 km: the most convenient connection is by train, with the Haruka line reaching both cities.

By Car

Travelers arriving by car reach central Osaka in approximately 45-60 minutes, Kyoto in approximately 70-90 minutes.

By Train

The Haruka train (JR-West) connects the airport to Tennoji (30 minutes), Osaka/Shin-Osaka (45-50 minutes) and Kyoto (75 minutes); discounted fare for foreign tourists from 1,300 yen (Tennoji) to 2,200 yen (Kyoto). Alternatively, the fast Nankai train connects Namba in about 38 minutes for 970 yen, a more economical option for those staying in Osaka.

By Bus

Limousine buses connect the airport to Osaka, Kyoto, Kobe and Nara with variable travel times between 55 minutes and 2 hours depending on destination.
💡
Tips If you're staying only in Osaka, the Nankai train to Namba (970 yen) is generally cheaper than Haruka; if your destination is Kyoto, Haruka with the discounted tourist rate remains the most convenient option.

How to get to Osaka from KIX

By Train

The Haruka train (30-75 minutes to Tennoji/Osaka/Kyoto) and the Nankai rapid service (38 minutes to Namba) are the fastest and most economical options.

By Bus

Limousine buses connect the airport to Osaka, Kyoto, Kobe, and Nara.

By Taxi

Taxis to Osaka (Namba) charge approximately 15,000-20,000 yen (higher at night), plus possible expressway tolls (2,000-3,000 yen); given the high cost compared to the train (970 yen), taxis are worthwhile only for large groups or bulky luggage.

Hotels near Kansai International Airport

Kansai airport sits on an artificial island about 50 km from the city, and even the fastest route to Osaka still takes 30-40 minutes by train: so there's no 'right outside the terminals' area comparable to other Japanese airports, and the choice comes down entirely to the arrival station rather than the distance from the centre. The JR Haruka train links the airport to Tennoji in around 30 minutes and to Shin-Osaka in 50, while the Nankai Rapi:t reaches Namba in 34-39 minutes: anyone taking the Shinkansen the next day saves time by sleeping in Shin-Osaka, anyone wanting Dotonbori's nightlife goes for Namba, anyone after a good compromise between train speed and city atmosphere picks Tennoji.

Frequently asked questions

Q. Is the Haruka train or Nankai better for reaching Osaka?

It depends on the Nankai service: the regular Airport line (not the Rapi:t) costs about 930-970 yen but takes 44 minutes; the Rapi:t (limited express, reserved seat) costs 1,520-1,880 yen for 35-38 minutes to Namba. The Haruka (now at standard fare, the tourist discount ended on June 30, 2026) remains preferable only for Tennoji, Shin-Osaka or Kyoto.

Q. How much does the Haruka train to Kyoto cost?

Note: the discount for foreign tourists (about 1,800-2,200 yen depending on the destination) ended on June 30, 2026. From July 1, 2026 the standard fare applies, roughly 2,900 yen for Kyoto, for a journey of about 75 minutes.

Q. Is it worth taking a taxi from Kansai to Osaka?

Generally not, given the cost of 15,000-20,000 yen versus 930-1,880 yen for the train (depending on the Nankai/Haruka service chosen); it only makes sense for large groups or those with a lot of luggage.

Q. Does Kansai also serve Nara and Kobe?

Yes, both cities can be reached by direct limousine bus from the airport, as well as with more convenient train combinations from Osaka.

Q. Which lounges accept Priority Pass?

NORTH LOUNGE (T1).

Q. Are any lounges open 24 hours?

Yes: NODOKA (T1).
