Bahamas: main airports
The Bahamas has five airports with active connections. The main one is Nassau Airport, on New Providence Island, the country's hub; followed by Freeport Airport in Grand Bahama, George Town Airport in Exuma, North Eleuthera Airport and San Salvador Airport, each a gateway to a different island of the archipelago.
Bahamas: recommended activities
Bahamas: visa and entry requirements
Most nationalities (European Union, United Kingdom, United States, Canada, Australia) do not need a visa for tourist stays of up to 90 days. The passport must be valid for the duration of the stay; proof of onward travel is required.
Bahamas: safety
The Bahamas are generally safe for tourists in tourist areas and on the smaller islands, with the usual precautions against petty theft in crowded areas of Nassau. Some outlying areas of Nassau (off the tourist routes) require greater caution, especially at night. Hurricane season runs from June to November, peaking between August and October.
Bahamas: health situation
No vaccination is mandatory for those arriving from Europe. Nassau's health facilities are of a good standard; on the smaller islands (Family Islands) provision is more limited, with evacuation to Nassau or the United States common for complex cases: insurance with adequate coverage is strongly recommended for anyone visiting the more remote islands.
Bahamas: currency, payments and connectivity
The currency is the Bahamian dollar (BSD), pegged to the US dollar at a 1:1 exchange rate; the US dollar is accepted everywhere at the same value, often without needing to change currency. Credit cards are widely accepted at hotels and tourist restaurants. Uber does not operate widely on the smaller islands: local taxis are the main means of transport, generally at a fixed published rate for the most common routes. For connectivity, the operators BTC and Aliv sell prepaid SIM cards, mainly available in Nassau and Freeport. For driving (on the left, despite most vehicles having the steering wheel on the left as in the US), the national licence is generally accepted for a short stay.
