Comoros: main airports
Comoros is served by Prince Said Ibrahim International Airport, on the island of Grande Comore, not far from the capital Moroni. Current direct connections are with Réunion, Mayotte, Kenya, Ethiopia, Tanzania and, seasonally, Turkey; there are currently no direct flights with mainland France, reachable only with a stopover.
The volcanic archipelago offers beaches, coral reefs and the active Karthala volcano, on the island of Grande Comore.
Comoros: recommended activities
Comoros: visa and entry requirements
A visa is issued on arrival for citizens of any nationality, including Italy and the European Union, at an indicative cost of about 30 euros (payable in euros or US dollars) and a duration that sources indicate as between 30 and 45 days: check the updated figure before departure.
A passport with at least 6 months of remaining validity and proof of a return or onward ticket are required.
Comoros: safety
The United States classifies Comoros at Level 2 ("Exercise Increased Caution"), for common crime, piracy incidents against small boats offshore, spontaneous protests (especially in Moroni, sometimes violent) and a limited healthcare system. There is no permanent US diplomatic representation in the country: consular assistance is handled by the US embassy in Madagascar.
Comoros has a long history of coup attempts since independence, but there is currently no active government instability: the alert level mainly concerns crime, occasional protests and limits on healthcare assistance, not an ongoing conflict.
Comoros: health situation
The yellow fever vaccine is neither required nor recommended by the CDC for those traveling to Comoros, there being no risk of transmission in the country.
Malaria, however, is present with high risk on all islands, year-round, with chloroquine-resistant strains: antimalarial prophylaxis is strongly recommended, to be arranged with a doctor specializing in travel medicine. Healthcare is limited, particularly outside Moroni.
Comoros: currency, payments and connectivity
The currency is the Comorian franc (KMF), pegged to the euro since 1999 at a fixed rate of about 492 KMF per 1 euro.
The official languages are Comorian (with different dialects from island to island), French, the language of government and commerce, and Arabic, the religious language.
