Airports in Honduras

Honduras: main airports

Honduras has four airports with active connections: San Pedro Sula Airport, the country's main industrial hub, Tegucigalpa Airport, the capital, as well as Roatán, the main Caribbean tourist island, and La Ceiba, on the coast, the gateway to the Bay Islands.

Honduras: visa and entry requirements

Most Western nationalities, including Italian, do not need a visa for short tourist stays (generally up to 90 days), also thanks to the CA-4 agreement that allows free movement between Honduras, Guatemala, El Salvador and Nicaragua within an overall limit of 90 days. The passport must have adequate remaining validity.

Honduras: safety

It must be said honestly: Honduras has a significant crime problem, historically among the highest in the world, linked to the presence of gangs (maras) concentrated especially in the outskirts of Tegucigalpa and San Pedro Sula; the United States classifies the country as Level 3 ('reconsider travel'). The main tourist areas, particularly the Bay Islands (Roatán, Utila) and Copán, have a markedly better security profile than the urban mainland, and are regularly visited by international tourists; concrete precautions nonetheless remain necessary in the big cities: use official taxis or organised transfers, avoid displaying valuables and avoid walking at night.

Honduras: health situation

A yellow fever certificate is not required for those arriving from Europe. Dengue and malaria risk is present in lower-lying areas: mosquito protection is advisable. The private healthcare facilities of the major cities are adequate for common emergencies; travel insurance with medical coverage remains advisable, especially for those visiting the islands or remote areas.

Honduras: currency, payments and connectivity

The currency is the Honduran lempira (HNL); the US dollar is widely accepted in tourist areas. Credit cards are common in mid-to-upscale hotels and restaurants. For connectivity, the operators Claro and Tigo sell prepaid SIM cards. For driving, an International Driving Permit (IDP) is generally also required alongside the national one.
