CM Airlines: Honduras's Domestic Flights to Roatán and the Bay Islands

CM Airlines, whose name comes from "Cielo Maya", is a Honduran airline founded in 2007 with its operating base at Tegucigalpa-Toncontín airport. It is today the largest carrier in Honduras by fleet size and the go-to option for anyone who needs to reach the Bay Islands — Roatán and Utila above all — without depending on the ferry.

History and positioning

Created to fill a gap in Honduran domestic air transport, CM Airlines has focused on short-haul domestic connections rather than international ambitions, occasionally adding regional routes to Guatemala and El Salvador through agreements with the Guatemalan carrier TAG. It is a business model centered on essential connectivity more than on network growth.

The fleet

The fleet is made up of small aircraft suited to the short runways of the Honduran islands: Saab 340, Embraer EMB 110 and Let 410, with the occasional addition of a Saab 340A leased from the regional affiliate TAG. These are aircraft designed for short hops, not for long-haul comfort.

Routes and network

From Tegucigalpa, CM Airlines serves nine Honduran domestic airports, including San Pedro Sula, the islands of Roatán and Utila, Puerto Lempira and Copán Ruinas — the latter the base for visiting the Maya archaeological sites. On the international side it operates a weekly service linking Guatemala City, San Pedro Sula and Tegucigalpa.

On board and service

On aircraft with a few dozen seats the onboard service is minimal by definition: no higher class, no entertainment, short flights where the real value lies in the time saved compared with a trip by road or by sea to the islands.

CM Airlines is the practical solution for anyone who wants to reach Roatán or Utila from Tegucigalpa or San Pedro Sula without the dead time of the ferry, or for those visiting Copán Ruinas on a multi-stop itinerary through inland Honduras. It is not an airline designed for those looking for long-haul comfort or a broad international network. A practical tip: on the routes to the Bay Islands capacity is limited by the small size of the aircraft, so in the high tourist season it is worth booking earlier than usual compared with a domestic route on a scheduled jet.
