Macau: main airports
Macao is served by Macao International Airport, located on the island of Taipa.
A special administrative region of China, a former Portuguese colony until 1999, Macao combines a UNESCO World Heritage old town with Sino-Portuguese architecture with a gambling sector among the largest in the world, which has earned it the nickname 'Las Vegas of Asia'.
Macau: recommended activities
Macau: visa and entry requirements
A tourist visa is not required for stays of under 30 days for most nationalities (81 countries have visa-free access for periods of 30 to 90 days); some nationalities (including Bangladesh, Nepal, Nigeria, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Vietnam) must instead apply for a visa in advance.
A passport valid for at least 90 days beyond the intended stay and a blank page for the entry stamp are required.
Macau: safety
Macao is generally considered a very safe destination, with violent crime rare.
The only precautions concern the casino areas, where it is nonetheless advisable to handle cash carefully, and the typhoon season (May to November), when sea and air connections can suffer sudden disruptions.
Macau: health situation
No specific vaccinations are generally required for entry. Up-to-date routine vaccinations are recommended. Healthcare is of good standard in the urban area.
Macau: currency, payments and connectivity
The currency is the Macanese pataca (MOP), pegged to the Hong Kong dollar at a rate of about 1.03 to 1: Hong Kong dollars are widely accepted in the city at nearly equal value.
Credit cards are widely accepted at hotels and major casinos; cash remains useful at the small shops and markets of the old town.
