This small island state at the heart of the Mediterranean offers a rich historical heritage, from prehistoric megalithic temples to the baroque capital Valletta, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Malta: recommended activities

Malta: visa and entry requirements

Malta is part of the Schengen area: citizens of other Schengen or EU countries can enter with just a valid ID card.

For non-EU visitors, entry for tourism for up to 90 days is generally possible without a visa for a large number of nationalities. Always check the updated requirements, including the upcoming ETIAS for visa-exempt countries.

Malta: safety

Malta is generally considered a very safe country, with violent crime rare.

The usual precautions apply against theft and pickpocketing in crowded tourist areas during the summer high season. Always check your country's updated travel advisories.

Malta: health situation

No mandatory vaccinations are required for entry from other EU or non-EU countries. The healthcare system is of good standard; travel insurance is nonetheless recommended (EHIC card for EU citizens).

Tap water is technically drinkable but has a strong taste due to desalination: many residents and visitors prefer bottled water.

Malta: currency, payments and connectivity

The currency is the euro. Credit cards are widely accepted throughout the archipelago.

The official languages are Maltese and English, the latter spoken fluently by almost the entire population. A tip (10%) is appreciated but not always expected at restaurants.
