Portugal: main airports
Portugal is served by numerous airports: Lisbon, the country's main hub, Porto, Faro, gateway to the Algarve, as well as the archipelagos of Madeira and Porto Santo, and the Azores with Ponta Delgada, Terceira, Faial, Santa Maria, Graciosa, São Jorge and Flores.
The country offers UNESCO World Heritage historic towns, spectacular Atlantic coastlines and two volcanic archipelagos of unique charm.
Portugal: recommended activities
Portugal: visa and entry requirements
Portugal is part of the Schengen area: EU citizens can enter with a valid ID card, while other non-Schengen countries can stay for up to 90 days in 180 without a visa if coming from exempt countries (including the US, UK, Canada).
For those needing a Schengen visa, the standard cost in 2026 is 90 EUR, with average processing times of 15 days (up to 45).
Portugal: safety
Portugal is generally considered one of the safest countries in Europe, with violent crime very rare.
The usual precautions apply against pickpocketing in the crowded tourist areas of Lisbon and Porto. Always check your country's updated travel advisories.
Portugal: health situation
No mandatory vaccinations are required for entry. Tap water is drinkable throughout the country.
The healthcare system is of good standard: always carry adequate travel insurance (EHIC card for EU citizens).
Portugal: currency, payments and connectivity
The currency is the euro (EUR). The official language is Portuguese; English is widely spoken in tourist areas.
Taxis run on meters: daytime fare (Tariff 1, urban) 0.96 EUR/km, rising to 1.21 EUR/km at night (21:00-6:00), on weekends and public holidays (about +26%), plus a fixed luggage surcharge of 1.60 EUR (for the whole ride, not per piece) and 0.80 EUR for phone bookings. New regulations approved in June 2026 plan to replace these surcharges with a single call fee of 0.80 EUR and eliminate the luggage surcharge, but they have not yet come into force.
