South Sudan: main airports
South Sudan is served by Juba International Airport, the country's only international airport, in the capital.
The world's youngest country, independent since 2011, is going through a phase of persistent political instability and intercommunal violence: it is not considered a tourist destination at present.
South Sudan: recommended activities
South Sudan: visa and entry requirements
A visa must be obtained before arrival: without a valid visa, entry may be denied at the border. A visa-on-arrival option, payable in cash US dollars, has been reported specifically for Juba International Airport, but do not rely on it without prior official verification with the relevant embassy or consulate.
A yellow fever vaccination certificate is also required.
South Sudan: safety
Nearly all Western governments advise against any travel to South Sudan, due to the risk of kidnapping, murder, shootings, home invasions, armed robbery and sexual violence, widespread throughout the country including the capital Juba.
The security situation can change rapidly: Juba airport itself can close or become inaccessible on short notice in the event of a deteriorating situation. Always check your country's official updated advisories before any travel consideration.
South Sudan: health situation
Proof of yellow fever vaccination is required for entry into the country. Up-to-date routine vaccinations are also generally recommended, along with an assessment of antimalarial prophylaxis with a doctor specializing in travel medicine, given the disease's prevalence throughout the country.
Healthcare is severely compromised across much of the territory: traveling with travel medical insurance covering evacuation is essential.
South Sudan: currency, payments and connectivity
The official currency is the South Sudanese pound (SSP), but the economy largely operates on a US dollar cash basis: bring clean, recent banknotes, as old or damaged ones are often refused by exchange offices. Always carry a sufficient cash reserve for the entire duration of the stay.
