Kinshasa Today: Instability in the DRC Capital
On the banks of the immense Congo River, Kinshasa is one of Africa's most vibrant megalopolises, celebrated for giving birth to Congolese rumba and for its National Museum rich in traditional art.
Facing the city, on the opposite bank of the river, looms Brazzaville, capital of the Republic of the Congo, in one of the rare pairs of capitals overlooking each other in the world.
Kinshasa is not a theater of direct combat like eastern Congo, but remains marked by chronic political instability, widespread crime, and fragile state infrastructure.
The real front of war is located more than 1500 kilometers away, in Nord Kivu, where the M23 rebel group has controlled broad areas around Goma since 2022, with clashes that have caused hundreds of thousands of displaced persons.
Even in the capital, the main risks remain robbery, express kidnappings, and demonstrations that sometimes degenerate into violence, in addition to a judicial and healthcare system in serious difficulty.
Most Western chancelleries therefore advise utmost caution in the capital and discourage completely any movement toward the eastern regions in conflict.
Those who visited Kinshasa in normal security conditions could discover the National Museum, the art markets of Marché des Voleurs, and hear live the music that made the city famous throughout Africa.
The country's true natural wealth, from rainforests to the mountain gorillas of Kivu, remains however out of reach as long as conflict in the east fails to find a political solution.
