A Day in Goleniow, Poland
In western Pomerania, not far from Stettin, Goleniow preserves a medieval urban layout enclosed by brick walls typical of Hanseatic architecture.
The small town, crossed by the Ina River, lives from agriculture and small industry, in a territory flat and still little touristic that is typical of northwestern Poland.
The ancient medieval walls of Goleniow, among the best-preserved in the entire region, still protect the ancient city gates, perfectly visible.
Heading toward the center, you'll encounter the Gothic church of St. James, in red brick, a typical example of medieval Pomeranian sacred architecture.
A few kilometers away, the Ina river crosses the surrounding countryside, with grassy banks frequented by fishermen and cyclists along flat routes.
Toward evening, the historic center comes alive with venues where you can sample the traditional dishes of northern Poland, between lake fish and typical soups.
Goleniow holds medieval heritage often overlooked compared to nearby Szczecin, despite being just minutes away.
A stopover that deserves attention for those visiting western Pomerania, appreciating the walls and red-brick Gothic architecture.
