One day in Vientiane: itinerary and highlights

Vientiane remains among Southeast Asia's most tranquil capitals, stretched along the Mekong with a pace of life far from the chaotic traffic of other regional metropolises.

Laos' capital, it preserves in its golden stupa the religious and national symbol of the country, flanked by a triumphal arch built with cement donated for an airport that was never built.

The Pha That Luang is the natural starting point: this great golden stupa, the national symbol of Laos depicted even on the country's coat of arms, according to tradition safeguards a relic of the Buddha and is surrounded by a courtyard of smaller temples.

Returning toward the center, you encounter the Patuxai, the triumphal arch built in the 1960s with cement meant for a new airport, now climbable for a view over the low city and its tree-lined avenues.

Continuing on, you reach the Wat Si Saket, the city's oldest surviving temple from an 19th-century Siamese invasion, with corridors that safeguard thousands of small Buddha statues.

For lunch, restaurants around the center offer laap and other dishes of Laotian cuisine, often accompanied by sticky rice served in bamboo baskets.

For the final part of the day, the Haw Phra Kaew adjacent to Wat Sisaket, a former royal temple now museum safeguarding Buddhist sculptures and historical artifacts from the Lao kingdom.

The Mekong riverbank instead comes alive at sunset with street food vendors and families strolling, with the Thai bank visible on the opposite shore.

By evening, the night market along the river remains the most direct way to close the day, among stalls of crafts and street food.

Pha That Luang, Patuxai, and Wat Si Saket are enough to show Vientiane's religious and historical identity, while an afternoon choice between Haw Phra Kaew and the Mekong riverbank adds either museum-like or fluvial dimension.

Buddha Park, just outside the city, with its surreal sculptures, and a trip to Luang Prabang, a UNESCO heritage site, remain chapters for a second visit. Watching the sun set over the Mekong with Thailand's bank at the horizon is the frame you carry away from Vientiane.
