What to see in Tirana in 1 day
Tirana painted the grey facades of its communist buildings with bold colours, an urban planning choice that transformed Albania's capital's appearance in just over a decade.
Albania's capital grown rapidly after the fall of communism, it mixes Ottoman mosques, socialist architecture and underground bunkers converted into museums of memory.
Skanderbeg Square is the natural starting point: the large central plaza dedicated to the Albanian national hero is surrounded by the Et'hem Bey Mosque, among the few surviving Ottoman buildings from the regime, and the Clock Tower, which you can climb for a view of downtown.
Just a few steps away stands the Pyramid of Tirana, a former museum dedicated to dictator Enver Hoxha, today transformed into a cultural and technological center after lengthy restoration.
Continuing on, you reach Bunk'Art 2, one of the atomic bunkers built by the regime and repurposed as a museum about surveillance and repression during the communist era.
For lunch, restaurants around Skanderbeg Square offer tavë kosi and other dishes from Albanian cuisine.
The Blloku, the former quarter reserved for communist party leadership, today transformed into the heart of the city's nightlife and trendy cafés.
By cable car you ascend to Mount Dajti, the mountain above the city nicknamed the balcony of Tirana, from which the entire capital and surrounding plain are dominated.
By evening, returning to the Blloku, the restaurants in the neighborhood are the obvious place to dine, among the city's vibrant gastronomic and nightlife scene.
Skanderbeg Square, the Pyramid, and Bunk'Art 2 already tell well Tirana's dual Ottoman and communist identity, while an afternoon choice between the Blloku and Mount Dajti adds either contemporary or panoramic character.
The National Museum of History and a trip to the beaches of the Albanian Riviera remain chapters for a second visit. Seeing the colorful facades of communist-era buildings against the gray of bunkers is perhaps Tirana's sharpest memory.
