Airfares: what the different classes really include
Behind names like basic, standard or flex lie very different service packages. Understanding what each fare really includes helps avoid paying more than necessary.
The three main fare classes
The basic or light fare covers only transport and a reduced carry-on bag: no seat choice, no free changes. It's only worth it with fixed dates and minimal baggage. The standard fare generally adds checked baggage and the ability to choose your seat for a small surcharge, with changes subject to a limited fee: it's the most common compromise. The flex fare includes changes and cancellations with no penalty, more generous baggage and often priority access, designed for those with uncertain plans or business travelers.
The real cost isn't the search price
The correct comparison between fares adds to the base price all services you expect to purchase separately — baggage, seat, change — because a basic fare often becomes more expensive than standard once you add two or three extras. It's worth doing this calculation before choosing, not after.
Details that matter over time
The cheapest fares typically earn a lower percentage of miles on the airline's loyalty program, and in case of cancellation or overbooking those who paid a higher tier get rebooked more quickly. Many airlines also allow you to upgrade to a higher fare after purchase by paying only the difference, a useful option for those who change their mind after booking.
Before choosing, calculate the total cost by adding to the base fare the services you'll actually use: it's the only way to understand if the cheapest tier is really the most convenient.
