Airport check-in: when is it still mandatory

Some situations make counter check-in the only possible option, regardless of how far in advance you try to complete the procedure from home: from non-standard travel documents to animal transport or firearms.

Documents that require in-person verification

Many countries outside Europe require physical inspection of the passport, visa or additional certificates before boarding, an inspection that an online system cannot handle with the same reliability as an operator examining the original document. Those traveling with non-standard documents — a travel permit for refugees or a consular laissez-passer — must almost always complete check-in in person for the same reason, as must those with a discrepancy between reservation and identity document.

Unaccompanied minors and assistance for reduced mobility

Unaccompanied minors must be brought by an adult to the dedicated counter, where staff complete responsibility forms and apply a specific service fee, different from the ticket price, which covers assistance until delivery to those meeting them at their destination. Those requiring reduced mobility assistance can often complete the digital part of the reservation, but must still present themselves at a dedicated counter to coordinate wheelchair or other aids.

Animals, oversize baggage and firearms transport

Those traveling with a pet, in cabin or hold, must complete check-in in person because staff physically verify the carrier, health documentation and weight limits — the practical details are in the guide on animals in the hold. The same applies to oversized baggage such as sports equipment or musical instruments. Those transporting a firearm for sporting purposes must present a specific declaration and a rigid case locked with a key, with ammunition always in a separate container.

Standby, last-minute changes and other exceptions

Those traveling on standby, without a confirmed seat, must present themselves at the counter because seat assignment only occurs after verifying actual availability on board shortly before departure. Even those who have changed their ticket the same day of departure, or have paid in part with a voucher issued by the airline, often find themselves having to complete check-in at the counter, because these changes are rarely processed online in time.

If your situation falls into one of these categories, contact the airline at least 48 hours before the flight to confirm the required procedure: some of these exceptions, from firearms transport to supplementary oxygen for medical reasons, require authorization that, if not requested in advance, can lead to boarding denial even with apparently completed online check-in.
