Alcantarí International Airport: where to stay, areas and recommended hotels
Alcantarí International Airport: where to stay, areas and recommended hotels
Alcantarí airport is about 30 km from Sucre, a transfer of nearly an hour that replaced the old city airport of Juana Azurduy in 2016: Trans Tulobo minibuses and authorized taxis (Taxis Santa Bárbara, Radio Móvil Glorieta, Dumbo Radio Móvil) remain the only options, with no rail or urban bus alternative. Since the long transfer is the same for everyone, choosing where to stay in Sucre comes down more to historic centre versus the La Recoleta district than to proximity to the airport.
Historic Centre and Plaza 25 de Mayo
City centre · About 30 km and 45-50 minutes from Alcantarí airport by taxi or with Trans Tulobo minibuses.
Best for: Travelers who want the main square, the Casa de la Libertad and the colonial museums within walking distance, in the liveliest part of the White City.
Pros
- Plaza 25 de Mayo, the Cathedral and the Casa de la Libertad reachable on foot from most accommodations
- The highest concentration of restaurants, bars and tour agencies in the city
Cons
- Narrow historic-centre streets, often congested during the middle hours of the day
- Few chain hotels: most of the supply consists of family-run guesthouses and apartments
Recommended hotels in this area
- Casa de Huespedes Isabella: Guesthouse with a panoramic terrace four blocks from the airport bus stop and a few steps from the main square; breakfast with fresh bread, yoghurt and fruit included.

La Recoleta
Neighbourhood · A few minutes by taxi or an uphill walk from Plaza 25 de Mayo; the same distance from Alcantarí airport as the rest of the city, about 45-50 minutes.
Best for: Travelers looking for Sucre's oldest neighbourhood, with stone streets, Franciscan convents and the viewpoint over the city, who accept a short climb from the centre.
Pros
- The Museo de la Recoleta and the Franciscan convent from 1601, among the best-preserved in the city
- Stone streets and a quieter atmosphere compared to the traffic of the centre
Cons
- The climb from the historic centre discourages those who don't want to walk at altitude
- A smaller range of accommodations compared to the main square area
Recommended hotels in this area
- B&B Recoleta: Family-run bed & breakfast in the La Recoleta neighbourhood, designed for those who want to stay close to the Franciscan convent and the viewpoint rather than the main square.
