Asmara International Airport: where to stay, areas and recommended hotels

Tourism to Eritrea is so limited that international platforms list only one proper hotel-standard property in Asmara: the offer, therefore, isn't a choice between different areas of the city, but a single option that's convenient for both the airport and the historic centre. Anyone arriving in Asmara almost always does so for just a few days and on infrequent flights, so it's best to simply book with some margin, without expecting the level of review detail found elsewhere in Africa.

Warsay Avenue

Airport area · About 10 minutes by car from the airport; the Fiat Tagliero Building, the Futurist structure from the 1930s that symbolises Italian colonial Asmara and is part of the UNESCO listing, is about a quarter of an hour's walk from the hotel.

Best for: For those who want the city's only internationally rated property, a few minutes from the airport and a walk from the UNESCO-listed historic centre.

Pros
  • Indoor and outdoor pool, two restaurants and an indoor Turkish bath, useful given how little nightlife there is outside the hotel
  • An in-between location that puts both the airport and the historic centre's rationalist architecture within walking distance
Cons
  • A very small sample of online reviews compared with any other African capital: the ratings should be taken with caution
  • No real alternative on the official OTA listings for this city: if the property is full or out of budget there's no comparable plan B

Recommended hotels in this area

  • Hotel Asmara Palace: 183 rooms on Warsay Avenue, Asmara's only 5-star property: two restaurants, two bars, indoor and outdoor pool and a Turkish bath, about a fifteen-minute walk from the Fiat Tagliero Building.
