Rome Fiumicino - Leonardo da Vinci Airport: where to stay, areas and recommended hotels

The Leonardo Express links Fiumicino to Termini in 32 minutes, so anyone landing with a few days in Rome has little reason to sleep next to the runways: the city is almost always the better choice, even with a mid-morning return flight. The balance tips with dawn departures, when every minute of transfer comes out of your sleep, and with one-night layovers, for which leaving the airport makes little sense. Those looking for evening life more than departure convenience can aim for Trastevere, reachable by train without passing through Termini.

At the airport

From the Hilton Rome Airport a covered walkway with a moving walkway leads to the terminals in under 10 minutes on foot; the Air Rooms HelloSky are in the T3 area, before security.

Best for: Departures before 7 and one-night layovers, when you don't want to leave the terminal area.

Pros
  • You walk to check-in, with no reliance on trains, shuttles or traffic on the A91
  • Air Rooms can be booked for just a few hours, to rest or shower between two flights
Cons
  • Only terminals and car parks around: for dinner you stay in the hotel or at the airport
  • For an evening in Rome you still need a train or taxi, there and back

Recommended hotels in this area

  • Hilton Rome Airport: The only hotel linked to the terminals by a covered walkway with a moving walkway, under 10 minutes on foot; indoor pool and gym for long layovers.
  • Air Rooms Rome Airport by HelloSky: 29 rooms in the public area of T3, before security: bookable for several nights or a few hours, even just for a shower before departing.

Fiumicino and Isola Sacra

Airport area · Paid hotel shuttles: the B&B Hotel one leaves from T3 at any hour on request, the Isola Sacra one must be booked at check-in. By car it takes 5-10 minutes.

Best for: Those arriving late or by car who want to spend less than at the terminal, with a shuttle for the morning flight.

Pros
  • Shuttles running before dawn, with no reliance on trains from Rome
  • The Ostia Antica excavations are close, handy for filling half a day of layover
Cons
  • Without a car you depend on hotel shuttle schedules and surcharges
  • Among roundabouts and shopping centres, there is little to do on foot in the evening

Termini station

Near the airport link · Non-stop Leonardo Express in 32 minutes, departing every 15 minutes and arriving at the station opposite the terminals; Terravision and SIT buses take about 55 minutes.

Best for: Those who want to see Rome and have the airport train a few steps from the room.

Pros
  • Direct train to Fiumicino every 15 minutes, no changes
  • Metro lines A and B in the same station for getting around the rest of the city
Cons
  • Piazza dei Cinquecento and the surrounding streets are busy and unpleasant in the evening
  • For the historic centre you still need the metro, a bus or a long walk

Recommended hotels in this area

  • NH Collection Roma Palazzo Cinquecento: Overlooking Piazza dei Cinquecento, a couple of minutes from the platforms; panoramic terrace and free gym. Reviews praise the breakfast.
  • Hotel Milani: Restored palazzo about 100 metres from Termini: handy for those arriving or leaving by Leonardo Express dragging their suitcases.

Trastevere

Neighbourhood · FL1 regional train from the airport station to Roma Trastevere, on the southern edge of the neighbourhood; by taxi 40-50 minutes depending on traffic.

Best for: Those who want to spend evenings among trattorias and alleys and accept a slightly longer transfer.

Pros
  • Direct train with the FL1, without passing through Termini
  • Restaurants and bars within walking distance of the hotel
Cons
  • From Roma Trastevere station to the heart of the neighbourhood you need tram 8 or a walk
  • Alleys full of bars, noisy until late on weekends

Recommended hotels in this area

  • Donna Camilla Savelli: Former convent designed by Borromini in the seventeenth century, with breakfast in the inner garden and rooftop terraces; on Via Garibaldi, at the foot of the Janiculum.
