Benbecula Airport: where to stay, areas and recommended hotels

Benbecula is a tiny airfield in the middle of the Outer Hebrides, with direct flights only to Glasgow and Stornoway: there's no city to choose between, only Balivanich, the village surrounding the runway, with a shop, a bank and a petrol station a few minutes' walk from the terminal. Without a rental car there's little to move around for: anyone wanting to venture further, towards the beaches and sites of North Uist, has to cross the causeways linking the islands, adding just over twenty minutes of driving compared with staying in Balivanich.

Balivanich, the airport village

Airport area · The houses are in the village of Balivanich, 5-10 minutes' walk from the terminal; Seasgair House is the closest, about 1 km from the runways.

Best for: For anyone arriving or leaving on a flight who wants to stay just steps from the runway, with a shop and petrol station close at hand.

Pros
  • The village shop, bank and petrol station just steps away, handy if something's missing
  • A few minutes on foot or by car from the runways, convenient with flights already at dawn
Cons
  • The village is tiny: no restaurants besides those in the village itself
  • A car is needed to get to the beaches or the rest of the islands

Recommended hotels in this area

  • Heb Holiday: A renovated 3-bedroom house right in the village next to the shop, bank and petrol station: handy for anyone arriving without a car who needs to shop.
  • Seasgair House: About 1 km from the runways, with a garden and private parking: the closest house to the airport in the village.

Culla Bay

Neighbourhood · Culla Bay is a few minutes' walk from the village of Balivanich and the terminal, on the same peninsula.

Best for: For anyone wanting a quiet house just steps from the beach, more than the village itself.

Pros
  • Culla Bay beach reachable on foot, a rare convenience for such a small airport
  • Isolated, quiet houses, away from the village's light traffic
Cons
  • No shop or venue nearby: everything is in the village, a few minutes by car
  • Few alternatives if the booked house isn't available

Recommended hotels in this area

  • Cuan: A luxury house about 100 metres from Culla Bay beach, with three bedrooms and a garage: the most reviewed of the village houses.

Baleshare, North Uist

Nearby town · Reachable only by car, crossing the causeways that link Benbecula to North Uist: just over twenty minutes from the terminal.

Best for: For anyone renting a car who wants a more remote and scenic area, away from the runways.

Pros
  • Isolated position with views over the Baleshare islands, away from any airport noise
  • A handy base for visiting the North Uist beaches on the following days
Cons
  • A car is strictly necessary: no bus links the terminal to Baleshare
  • Shops and services are all in Balivanich, not on the island

Recommended hotels in this area

  • Taigh Gorm: A new Scottish-style cottage in Baleshare, with views over the islands and wildlife sightings from the living room, far from the airport village.
