Chinggis Khaan International Airport: where to stay, areas and recommended hotels
Chinggis Khaan International Airport: where to stay, areas and recommended hotels
The new Chinggis Khaan Airport, opened in 2021, is located about 50 km south of Ulaanbaatar, in the Khushig valley: much farther from the centre than the old Buyant-Ukhaa airport, with a transfer that normally takes 55-90 minutes and can exceed two hours in case of frost or heavy traffic. A shared shuttle leaves every hour, from 4 to 22, towards Bagshiin Deed in the city centre; by private car the times remain similar. Since there is no tourist infrastructure near the new terminal, the choice falls almost inevitably on the centre, around Sukhbaatar Square, where the international hotels and the capital's life are concentrated.
Sukhbaatar Square and the centre
City centre · About 50 km from the airport, 55-90 minutes by car (up to 2 hours in case of snow or traffic); public shuttle every hour from 4 to 22 towards the centre.
Best for: Practically anyone: there are no hotels near the new airport, so the centre is the starting base for any stay.
Pros
- Sukhbaatar Square, the ministries and the big chain hotels concentrated within a few blocks
- Same transfer time from the airport to any hotel in the capital, so no real advantage in looking for peripheral alternatives
Cons
- The transfer remains long and unpredictable in winter, whichever hotel you choose
- No area truly close to the terminal for those with only a short layover
Recommended hotels in this area
- Shangri-La Ulaanbaatar: About 700 metres from Sukhbaatar Square, between Nayramdal Park and Chinggis Khaan Square; four restaurants and an indoor pool, among the few of international standard in the capital.
- Kempinski Hotel Khan Palace: 99 rooms in the Bayanzurkh district, along East Cross Road; luxury hotel operating since 2005, about 2 km from Sukhbaatar Square.
- Best Western Premier Tuushin Hotel: About 100 metres from Sukhbaatar Square and the Government Palace, on Prime Minister Amar Street; among the most central hotels in the capital, bar none.
