Cozumel International Airport: where to stay, areas and recommended hotels
San Miguel and the Malecón
City centre · About 3 km and 5-10 minutes by taxi from the centre of San Miguel; the properties further south along Avenida Melgar, like the Blue Angel Resort, are instead about 20 minutes from the airport.
Best for: Those who want the ferry to Playa del Carmen, the restaurants downtown and the Malecón's evening life without leaving the town.
- Ferries to Playa del Carmen, restaurants and the Malecón's evening life within walking distance or a few minutes by taxi
- Generally lower prices than the large all-inclusive resorts in the coastal areas
- No beach directly downtown: for the open sea you still need to head north or south
- Some properties along Avenida Melgar are right on the road, so traffic can be heard in the rooms
Recommended hotels in this area
- Blue Angel Resort: On the busy Avenida Melgar, with the Caribbean Sea right behind the hotel; a dive centre with certification courses on site, designed mainly for those coming to Cozumel to dive.

Zona Hotelera Norte
Neighbourhood · About 6 km and 10 minutes by car from the airport, the fastest connection among the beach areas in this guide.
Best for: Those who want the beach resort closest to the airport and downtown, without going as far as the big complexes in the south.
- The shortest transfer from the airport among the areas with a real beach
- San Miguel and the Malecón are about 10 minutes away by taxi, handy for evenings outside the resort
- Less choice of hotels than the larger Zona Hotelera Sur
- A less sheltered beach with less direct coral reef than some stretches in the south
Recommended hotels in this area
- The Westin Cozumel: On the Carretera Costera Norte, about 10 minutes from the airport; private beach with clear water for snorkelling, free snorkel and kayak rental.

Zona Hotelera Sur
Neighbourhood · From about 13 km/25 minutes (Presidente InterContinental, the closest) to about 18-19 km/20 minutes for resorts further south like Occidental Cozumel and Iberostar Waves Cozumel.
Best for: Those who want the large all-inclusive resorts and diving on the Palancar and Santa Rosa reefs, accepting a longer transfer from the airport.
- Wider, more sheltered private beaches than the rest of the island
- Direct or near-direct access to the Palancar and Santa Rosa reefs, among the most renowned for diving
- The longest transfer from the airport among the areas in this guide
- An area designed to stay within the resort: outside the properties there is almost nothing within walking distance
Recommended hotels in this area
- Presidente InterContinental Cozumel Resort & Spa by IHG: The closest to the airport among the large resorts in the south, on a secluded private beach; 220 rooms, butler service and one of the island's most extensive stretches of beach.
- Occidental Cozumel: On Playa San Francisco, about 18.6 km from the airport; the property has changed its name several times over the years (Occidental Grand Cozumel, then Grand Cozumel by Occidental) before returning to the current Occidental Cozumel.
- Iberostar Waves Cozumel - All Inclusive: On the more isolated south-western coast of the island, about 18.7 km from the airport, next to the Palancar and Santa Rosa reefs; designed mainly for those coming for snorkelling and diving.
