Daniel Oduber Quiros International Airport: where to stay, areas and recommended hotels

Daniel Oduber Quirós is the true gateway to Guanacaste, far more for the beaches of the Papagayo peninsula and the Rincón de la Vieja volcano than for the city of Liberia itself, which remains a provincial capital with no great tourist attractions. Those with a dawn flight or a short stopover find everything they need 5-10 minutes from the terminal; those who want the sea or nature have to accept longer transfers, often over 45 minutes, on roads that are not always paved in the last few kilometres.

Next to the airport

Airport area · 5-10 minutes by car from the terminal; both hotels offer a free shuttle available 24 hours on request.

Best for: One-night stopovers and very early flights, when all that matters is the shortest possible transfer.

Pros
  • Free shuttle available 24 hours on request at both hotels, useful for the earliest flights
  • No risk of missing the flight because of traffic on the Interamericana
Cons
  • Few independent restaurants nearby: dinner almost always means staying at the hotel
  • The beaches of Guanacaste remain 45 minutes or more by car

Liberia, the centre

Nearby town · 10-20 minutes by car from the airport (11-13 km), depending on traffic at the roundabout entering the city.

Best for: Those who want more choice of restaurants and shops while still staying a few minutes from the airport.

Pros
  • More choice of restaurants and supermarkets than around the airport
  • Historic centre with low colonial-style houses, which gives the city its nickname 'the White City'
Cons
  • Not very walkable outside the oldest core
  • The beaches remain 45 minutes or more by car, just as from the airport area

Recommended hotels in this area

  • Best Western El Sitio Hotel: Two pools, a fitness centre and an in-house casino, where the Panamericana meets the road to the beaches; about 13 km from the airport.

Papagayo Peninsula

Nearby town · About 35 km from the airport, 45-70 minutes by car depending on the source and traffic, on roads not always paved on the last stretch of the peninsula.

Best for: Those looking for a luxury coastal resort and able to accept the longest transfer in this guide.

Pros
  • Private bays and calm water, among the most sheltered on the northern Pacific coast
  • Resort isolated from the rest of the peninsula, with private beaches and an ocean-view golf course
Cons
  • One of the longest transfers in this guide: up to over an hour from the airport
  • One of the highest price brackets in Costa Rica, far from the budget options near the airport

Rincón de la Vieja and the hot springs

Nearby town · About 35 km from the airport, 45-70 minutes by car depending on the source, on a road that is partly unpaved in the last few kilometres.

Best for: Those who want the volcano, the natural hot springs and adventure tourism more than the beach.

Pros
  • Natural hot springs of the Río Negro with ten pools carved into the rock, included in the stay
  • Starting point for excursions in the Rincón de la Vieja National Park, among the most accessible active volcanoes in the country
Cons
  • Last few kilometres on an unpaved road, to be avoided in a rental car without four-wheel drive after heavy rain
  • No independent restaurants nearby: meals are only available at the property
