Francisco de Sá Carneiro Airport: where to stay, areas and recommended hotels

Metro Line E links the airport to the centre of Porto, terminating at Trindade, in about 25 minutes; the service runs from 6 in the morning to one at night. For those staying more than one night the historic centre is almost always the better choice, with Ribeira, Aliados and the Sé within walking distance of the room. The calculation changes with departures before 6 and with one-night layovers, when every minute of transfer counts: the Park Hotel Porto Aeroporto, 300 metres from the terminal, avoids the trip entirely. Those who want a higher-end international hotel without going all the way to the centre can stop in Boavista, the business district halfway there, where the metro stops at Casa da Música a few stations before Trindade.

At the airport in Maia

Airport area · The Park Hotel Porto Aeroporto is about 300 metres from the terminal, in the Moreira area (Maia); a paid shuttle (€2 per person, one way) links the hotel and the air terminal.

Best for: Departures before 6 in the morning and one-night layovers, when you want to stay a step from check-in.

Pros
  • No reliance on metro or shuttle schedules: the terminal is a few minutes on foot
  • Handy for 6-7am flights, when the metro isn't running yet
Cons
  • Only the industrial and commercial area of Moreira around: for dinner you stay in the hotel
  • For an evening in Porto you still need 20-25 minutes by taxi to the historic centre

Recommended hotels in this area

  • Park Hotel Porto Aeroporto: About 300 metres from the terminal, in the Moreira area (Maia): among the verified candidates it's the option closest to the runways, with a paid shuttle (€2 per person) and a garden with an in-house restaurant for those with a long layover.

Boavista, the business district

Neighbourhood · Metro Line E stops at Casa da Música, in the heart of Boavista, a few stations before the Trindade terminus: from the airport you arrive in just over 20 minutes. By taxi the trip is shorter than for the historic centre, because Boavista lies along the same route that links the airport to the city.

Best for: One-night layovers or business stays wanting a higher-end international hotel without going all the way to the historic centre.

Pros
  • Closer to the runways than the historic centre, but with international chain hotels and business-city services
  • Casa da Música, a theatre and metro station, is the hub of the district and is within walking distance of the three hotels
Cons
  • Mostly a business district: evening life is less concentrated than in Ribeira or Aliados
  • For the city's historic core you still need 20-25 minutes by metro or taxi

Recommended hotels in this area

  • Sheraton Porto Hotel & Spa: On Rua Tenente Valadim, one minute on foot from Avenida da Boavista: indoor pool, spa with Turkish hammam and 4,000 sqm of garden, among the most complete facilities in the business district.
  • Crowne Plaza Porto: On Avenida da Boavista 1466, on the district's main avenue, a few minutes on foot from the Rotunda da Boavista and the Casa da Música metro.
  • Holiday Inn Express Porto - Boavista: On Rua de 5 de Outubro, on the edge of Boavista towards Ramalde: budget tier among the international chains in the area, with co-working spaces and breakfast included.

Historic centre: Aliados, Ribeira and Sé

City centre · Metro Line E reaches Trindade in about 25 minutes; from there a single stop on Line D leads to Aliados, above the São Bento railway station. By taxi the route is about 11 km and 20-25 minutes, around €20-24 during the day.

Best for: Those staying more than one night who want to experience the historic centre on foot, with the metro to the airport still just one change away.

Pros
  • Ribeira, the bridges over the Douro, Clérigos and the Bolhão market within walking distance of most hotels
  • Line D links Trindade to the rest of the centre without needing a car, handy also for the return to the airport
Cons
  • Streets often crowded with tourists, especially between Ribeira and Clérigos in the summer months
  • Traffic around Praça da Liberdade and Praça da Batalha makes the taxi less predictable than the metro at peak hours

Recommended hotels in this area

  • InterContinental Porto - Palacio das Cardosas: An eighteenth-century palace on Praça da Liberdade, right above Avenida dos Aliados: among the verified candidates, the single most central location, a few steps from Clérigos and the Bolhão market.
  • Pestana Vintage Porto Hotel & World Heritage Site: 18 historic buildings joined together on Praça da Ribeira, a UNESCO World Heritage site, with views of the Douro, the Gaia wine cellars and the Dom Luís I bridge.
