Genova Cristoforo Colombo Airport: where to stay, areas and recommended hotels

Genoa airport is in the Sestri Ponente district: a shuttle takes you to the platforms of the nearby station in just 5 minutes, from where regional trains reach both Pegli and the Principe and Brignole stations. Those with a dawn flight, a short layover or a late-night landing save time by staying on the Pegli side, just a couple of stations from the gates. Those who instead want to visit the caruggi, the old port and the aquarium do better staying near Piazza Principe, where the Volabus direct from the airport also arrives, convenient with a lot of luggage. Nervi, on the sea east of the city, remains an alternative for those staying more than one night.

Airport area and Pegli

Airport area · Airlink bus from the terminal to Sestri Ponente Aeroporto station in 5 minutes, running every 15 minutes from 6 to 22; from there a regional train reaches Pegli in about 3 minutes.

Best for: Those with a dawn flight, a short layover or a late-night landing who want to stay just a train ride from the gates.

Pros
  • From check-in to the hotel just one change is needed, bus plus train
  • Residential district by the sea, away from the ring road
  • Beaches and seafront within walking distance, not just airport hangars
Cons
  • The historic centre remains 20-25 minutes away by train plus the walk
  • In the evening there are few places open in the area
  • The Airlink doesn't run after 22, a taxi is needed

Recommended hotels in this area

  • Hotel Mediterranee: Eighteenth-century seafront palazzo 200 metres from Pegli station and about 3 km from the airport, almost all 90 rooms have a sea view.
  • Hotel Castello Miramare: Medieval-origin castle with direct access to the free beach of Pegli, 17 rooms and a panoramic terrace, just steps from the station.

Principe Station

Near the airport link · The AMT Volabus connects the terminal to Genova Piazza Principe and Brignole in 25-35 minutes, a service about every 45 minutes (from Brignole, first departure 5:00, last 23:15).

Best for: For those visiting the caruggi, the old port and the aquarium, and using the Volabus to go to and from the airport.

Pros
  • Station with trains to all of Liguria and a direct bus to the airport
  • Old port, aquarium and caruggi within walking distance
  • More choice of hotels and price ranges than near the airport
Cons
  • The Volabus runs every 45 minutes, so allow some margin
  • The area around the station is busy and less tidy in the evening
  • It still takes a good half-hour to get to the airport

Recommended hotels in this area

  • B&B Hotel Genova Principe: A minute's walk from Piazza Principe station, from where the Volabus to the airport departs; 108 rooms and reception open 24 hours.

Nervi

Neighbourhood · From Nervi station a direct regional train reaches Genova Piazza Principe in 20-27 minutes; from Principe you continue with the Volabus to the airport.

Best for: Those staying more than one night who prefer the Nervi seafront to the traffic of the centre.

Pros
  • Passeggiata Anita Garibaldi and historic parks within walking distance of the hotel
  • Quiet residential district, away from the port traffic
  • Direct rail connection with Principe, no changes
Cons
  • From the airport you always need the double change, train plus Volabus
  • It's the area farthest from the airport among those in this guide
  • Out of season some places on the seafront close early

Recommended hotels in this area

  • Hotel Esperia: Two minutes from the sea and a hundred metres from the Nervi promenade, with a panoramic terrace and breakfast featuring homemade Ligurian products.
