George F. L. Charles Airport: where to stay, areas and recommended hotels

George F. L. Charles, still called Vigie Airport by many after the runway that runs parallel to the beach of the same name, is Castries's city airport: unlike Hewanorra, in the south of the island, here downtown and even the tourist area of Rodney Bay are within a reasonable transfer. Those arriving on small regional aircraft or inter-island flights can stay in the city within minutes; those aiming for the resort life of Rodney Bay accept 20-30 minutes by car, far less than it would take starting from Hewanorra.

Castries and Vigie

Airport area · Downtown Castries is about 2 km from the terminal; the apartments in the Ciceron/Morne Coubaril area, such as Anne Marie Villas, are about 4 km away, 10 minutes by car.

Best for: Short layovers and those who just need to spend the night before an inter-island flight, staying just minutes from the terminal and the cruise port.

Pros
  • A very short transfer, useful for those arriving or leaving on regional flights at awkward times
  • Central market, cruise port and Vigie Beach reachable in a few minutes
Cons
  • Few quality hotels in the city: most accommodation is independent apartments or B&Bs
  • For the finest beaches on the north coast you still need a transfer by car

Recommended hotels in this area

  • Anne Marie Villas: Independent apartments in the residential area of Ciceron, about 4 km from the terminal, with sea views and free private parking; managed directly by the owner.

La Toc

Neighbourhood · La Toc bay is about 3 km from the terminal, 10-15 minutes by car or hotel shuttle.

Best for: Those wanting an all-inclusive resort and a private beach while staying just minutes from the terminal, without going as far as Rodney Bay.

Pros
  • The shortest transfer among the island's all-inclusive resorts
  • A 9-hole golf course and a private beach within the property
Cons
  • The waters of the bay can be rough, less suited to swimming than the sheltered beaches of the north
  • Some rooms and common areas are reported as needing renovation compared with other Sandals properties on the island

Rodney Bay

Neighbourhood · About 18-20 km north of Castries: 20-30 minutes by car or taxi, far less than the 70-90 minutes it would take coming from Hewanorra, the island's other airport.

Best for: Those wanting the island's area with the most restaurants, bars and evening life, accepting half an hour's transfer from the city airport.

Pros
  • Reduit Beach, the marina and dozens of restaurants and bars within walking distance of the area's hotels
  • Still a shorter transfer than from Hewanorra, the international airport in the south of the island
Cons
  • You still need a car or a taxi to arrive and get around, as there is no direct public transport from the airport
  • A tourist area with higher prices than Castries and its surroundings

Recommended hotels in this area

  • Coco Palm: Boutique hotel in the heart of Rodney Bay Village, lagoon pool with swim-up bar, a few minutes' walk from Reduit Beach; the 'city' field on the Booking listing is inaccurate, the hotel is in Rodney Bay and not in Castries city centre.
