Gibraltar Airport: where to stay, areas and recommended hotels

Gibraltar Airport is unique in the world: the runway crosses Winston Churchill Avenue, the only road linking the territory to Spain, and every take-off or landing blocks traffic for about ten minutes. The terminal is roughly 500 metres from the town centre, so there's really no transfer problem here: you reach your hotel on foot or with a few-minute taxi ride, whichever area you choose. The real choice is between Ocean Village, the marina and restaurant district closest to the runway, and Main Street, the shopping street and historic centre.

Ocean Village and the marina

Airport area · Less than 10 minutes' walk from the terminal and from the border with Spain; even a taxi is unnecessary with light luggage.

Best for: For travellers who want to stay a few minutes' walk from the terminal and dine among the marina's seafront restaurants.

Pros
  • Over 25 restaurants and bars along the marina's waterfront, with views of the Mediterranean and Spain
  • Shared pools and hot tubs among Ocean Village's residential towers
Cons
  • A recent, residential area, without the charm of Main Street's historic centre
  • In the evening life revolves around the marina: Main Street's shops are still a 10-15 minute walk away

Main Street and the historic centre

City centre · 10-15 minutes on foot from the terminal, or a few-minute taxi ride.

Best for: For travellers who want Main Street's shopping and the British atmosphere of the historic centre, a few minutes' walk or taxi ride from the airport.

Pros
  • Main Street, Casemates Square and the cathedral within walking distance
  • Cable car to the Rock and the Barbary macaques a few minutes' walk away
Cons
  • Main Street is pedestrianised and crowded with tourists during the day
  • Fewer seafront restaurants than Ocean Village
