How to entertain a child during the airport wait
The waiting hours on the ground before boarding allow the child the free movement that the flight will then deny for hours: it's the right time to let them run, not to keep them still.
Burn off energy with free movement
Walking along the corridors and exploring the the common areas...; Dedicated play areas...; small tasks of the terminal allows the child to burn off the energy that in flight must instead be contained for hours in a seat. It's a free activity that's worth planning before arriving at the gate, not after.
Views of the runway and play areas in the terminal
Where the airport offers views overlooking the runway, watching planes take off and land is a natural and free distraction for most small children. Dedicated play areas are increasingly common in major airports: checking for their presence in advance by consulting the terminal map allows you to plan the wait around this point of reference.
Alternate short activities instead of one long one
Alternating movement, quiet play and a small snack keeps the child's attention longer than a single prolonged distraction. Involving them in small tasks, such as holding their own passport or pulling a small trolley, adds a sense of responsibility that often works better than another game.
If the wait stretches due to a delay, change activities before the child gets bored with the current one: anticipating boredom works better than remedying it after. For the tricks to use instead during flight, also see Entertainment for young travelers: goodbye boredom.
