How to find your way around a large airport
At the world's largest airports, distances are measured in kilometers: at Atlanta (ATL) the walk between the extreme concourses would require about 35 minutes, while the internal Plane Train reduces it to 5-15 minutes. Knowing these transportation systems in advance, more than signage, makes the difference in actual travel times.
Understand the structure before moving
Large hubs are organized by terminal or concourse, often assigned to specific groups of airlines or alliances. Istanbul (IST), for example, is a single terminal divided into five concourses — A, B, D, F, G — where the distance between the farthest gates can exceed 20 minutes of walking. Checking the airport website before arrival to see which area your flight belongs to avoids moving around randomly based only on signage encountered along the way.
Internal trains and moving walkways: use them, don't avoid them
Atlanta's Plane Train connects seven concourses free of charge every two minutes or so, 24 hours a day, and the same principle applies to the people movers at many other mega hubs: walking a distance that the internal train covers in minutes only makes sense if you have plenty of time. Observing the rhythm of these systems on first use helps better synchronize subsequent movements.
Minimum connection time and changing terminals
Some hubs require you to exit and re-enter with a new security check to change terminals, while others offer internal transit areas that avoid this step. At Istanbul, for example, the minimum recommended connection time is 60-90 minutes for international connections, precisely because of the distances between concourses. Checking this detail for your specific itinerary, especially if it includes a terminal change during the stopover, avoids finding yourself with tighter margins than expected.
Apps and landmarks to not get lost
Most large hubs publish an interactive map in their official app, capable of calculating the fastest route to the gate taking into account temporary closures. Even mentally noting the pier or area number where you are during a break makes it easier to return to the gate after shopping, without having to retrace the entire route from scratch.
Before walking long distances, check if an internal train or moving walkway is available in the same direction: at mega hubs with seven or more concourses like Atlanta, the difference between walking and using the people mover can be worth a good 20 minutes on your connection time.
