How to pack a child's bag for the trip

A child's suitcase requires different considerations than an adult's, especially for medications, liquids, and objects that provide emotional security during travel.

Medications and liquids at security

Medications must always go in carry-on baggage, in original packaging with the instruction sheet; liquid medications don't count toward the 100 ml limit if declared separately. The same exception applies to milk, water for baby bottles, and baby food intended for the child during travel, to be presented in a clear bag at security. For prescription medications bring the medical prescription with you, preferably recent.

Comfort objects and clothing

The favorite stuffed animal or blanket must always go in carry-on baggage, never in checked baggage: in case of delay or loss of checked luggage, the child still has the object that gives them security. For clothing it's a good idea to calculate one extra change compared to usual, because children soil their clothes more often, thus avoiding having to wash clothes during a short stay.

Labels and involving the child

Labeling with the child's name even small items of clothing, like socks or accessories, prevents losses in group contexts. Involving the child, when age permits, in the choice of some items reduces last-minute requests, while checking the weather forecast at the destination before closing the suitcase prevents ill-fitting clothing for the climate. Always put medications, comfort object, and a complete change in carry-on baggage: it's the only part of the luggage that stays with you, whatever happens to the one in hold.
