Air Moldova: Why the Moldovan Airline No Longer Flies (and What to Know Before Booking)

Air Moldova is the flag carrier of Moldova, born in the early 1990s after the breakup of the Soviet aviation system and based at Chisinau airport. Since May 2023 the company has suspended all flights and the sale of new tickets, in an attempt to avoid bankruptcy through an accelerated restructuring procedure approved by the court.

A financial crisis that predates the suspension

Air Moldova's difficulties did not arise suddenly in 2023: years of losses, made worse by the impact of the pandemic and the airspace closure linked to the conflict in neighboring Ukraine, had already pushed the company's debt to around 2 billion Moldovan lei (over 100 million euros).

The fleet before the suspension

Until 2023 the airline operated a mixed fleet of five single-aisle Airbus jets (one A319, two A320s, one A321 on wet lease) along with two regional Embraer E190s, a composition typical of a small to mid-sized national carrier.

The network that existed before the halt

Before the suspension, Air Moldova connected Chisinau to about twenty destinations, mainly in Italy, Spain, Greece, France, Austria, Portugal, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Belgium, Romania, Cyprus and Turkey: a network oriented almost entirely toward western and southern Europe.

The situation today: still no restart

Despite restructuring attempts and talks with potential investors, there is currently no confirmed date for flights to resume: the Air Moldova brand remains formally active but without a single aircraft in commercial service.

Today Air Moldova is not an airline you can actually count on to book a flight: there is currently no commercial service in operation. Anyone who needs to reach Chisinau should therefore turn to carriers active on that route, such as Wizz Air, airBaltic or other European operators that cover Moldova. The practical tip: before treating any online reference to Air Moldova as an operating airline, check the date of the source and look at updates from the Moldovan Civil Aviation Authority, because many pages and flight comparison sites still do not reflect the suspension that has been in place since 2023.
