Living the airport: tricks to navigate the terminal

Since 2023, Legislative Decree 18/2023, implementing the EU Drinking Water Directive, requires Italian airports to install free water fountains beyond security checkpoints: by the end of 2025, 22 airports in the country will have activated them. It's just one of many hidden terminal details that, once known, transform waiting hours from passive strain to time managed systematically.

Secondary gates and free spots

Official apps of major hubs display in real-time the least crowded areas of the terminal, typically far from intercontinental flight gates during peak hours. If your flight isn't for several hours, moving toward the peripheral gates — those used by regional connections or evening departures — almost always guarantees you a free power outlet and a bench all to yourself.

Free water and where to refresh

Before buying a bottle of water at full price, check if your airport is among those that have already activated the free dispensers required by European regulations: they're almost always found beyond security checkpoints, near central dining areas. If you need to freshen up after a long flight, several major airports also offer paid showers, often included in access to some pay-per-use lounges: a way to get two services at the price of one.

Food away from main flows

Bistros in the peripheral zones of the terminal almost always offer higher quality than fast-food outlets located in the most heavily trafficked passages, plus free tables even during peak hours. It's a simple rule but few apply it: the more visible a restaurant is from the main corridor, the longer the line will be.

Gate monitors and local duty-free

Gate changes aren't always announced over the loudspeaker, especially in larger terminals: checking the departure monitors periodically remains the only way to avoid surprises. Once past document control, glancing at local duty-free shops — not the usual international chains — is often the only way to discover specialty products of the country you're leaving.

If you have more than two hours of waiting time, enable push notifications from your flight app before sitting down: it's the quickest way to know about a gate change before it's announced, and avoids the last-minute rush to the other end of the terminal.
