Thessaloniki Macedonia International Airport: where to stay, areas and recommended hotels
Makedonia Airport has no metro of its own: bus 78 connects it to the centre in about 45 minutes, with services running at night too. Those staying in the city for the seafront and the White Tower find more choice by sticking to the bus line; those with a dawn flight or who prefer not to go into the centre can stop near the terminal, in Thermi, where the area's only 5-star hotel is also found, inside the casino complex.
Airport area and Thermi
Airport area · Athina Airport Hotel is about 1.9 km from the terminal, Avalon 3.5 km, both reachable in a few minutes by car; the Hyatt Regency is about 3 km away, inside the Regency Casino complex.
Best for: Short layovers, dawn flights or those with work commitments in the Thermi area, away from the centre.
Pros
- Minutes from the terminal, convenient for those arriving late or leaving early
- The Hyatt Regency offers a 5-star standard rare so close to an airport, with the largest casino in the Balkans attached
Cons
- Thermi is a residential area with no evening life of its own, outside the casino
- For the centre and the seafront you still need 20-30 minutes by car or bus 78
Recommended hotels in this area
- Athina Airport Hotel: About 1.9 km from the terminal, it's among the hotels closest to the airport; a budget option for those who just need to sleep between two flights.
- Hyatt Regency Thessaloniki: 152 rooms inside the Regency Casino complex, about 3 km from the airport; an outdoor pool, a spa and the Ambrosia restaurant serving Greek cuisine.
