Luxor International Airport: where to stay, areas and recommended hotels
Luxor airport is just 6-8 km from the centre, with the east bank of the Nile reachable in 10-15 minutes without ever crossing the river. The real choice, however, concerns the two banks: the east bank, where the temples of Luxor and Karnak are, or the west bank, where the Valley of the Kings and the other necropolises are found, reachable only by crossing the bridge 7 km south of the city or by taking the local ferry. Many visitors, however, sleep on one of the Nile cruises that depart from Luxor towards Aswan: this guide covers only land-based hotels.
East Bank - Luxor and Karnak
City centre · About 10-15 minutes from the airport, on the same bank: no bridge or ferry needed.
Best for: Travelers who want the temples of Luxor and Karnak and the Nile promenade just minutes away, without crossing the river.
Pros
- No need to cross the Nile to reach the airport or the temples of Luxor and Karnak
- More restaurants and the largest choice of hotels in the whole city
Cons
- For the Valley of the Kings and the other sites on the west bank you still need the bridge or the ferry
- A more touristy and busy area, especially near the temple of Luxor
Recommended hotels in this area
- Hilton Luxor Resort & Spa: On the east bank at Karnak, with the largest Nile frontage in Luxor and two infinity pools; about 15 minutes from the airport and 4 km from the temples of Luxor and Karnak.

West Bank - towards the Valley of the Kings
Neighbourhood · The Mustafa El-Naggar bridge is 7 km south of Luxor: by car from the airport it takes 25-35 minutes; alternatively you cross on the local ferry from the centre and continue by taxi, 30-45 minutes in total.
Best for: Travelers who focus their visit on the Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut and the Colossi of Memnon.
Pros
- Al Moudira is surrounded by cultivated fields, far from the crowds of the east bank
- Gold Ibis is just minutes from the local ferry to central Luxor
Cons
- You always have to cross the Nile to reach the airport or the centre of Luxor
- Fewer restaurants and less evening life than on the east bank
Recommended hotels in this area
- Al Moudira Hotel: The only luxury hotel on the west bank, within a property of almost 8 hectares among the fields at Hager Al Dabbeya; 54 suites around interior courtyards, far from the tourist traffic of the east bank.
- Gold Ibis Hotel: In a village on the west bank at Al Bairat, just minutes from the local ferry to central Luxor; a panoramic terrace over the Nile and lower prices than on the east bank.
