Macau International Airport: where to stay, areas and recommended hotels

The airport is on an artificial island connected to Taipa, 1.5 km from the Cotai Strip and about 5 km from the Macao peninsula: in practice, every part of the city is 5-20 minutes away by taxi. Those traveling for the casinos and mega-resorts can stay right in Cotai, stepping out literally steps from the hotel; those wanting the Ruins of St. Paul's, the UNESCO-listed historic center and a more Portuguese atmosphere will find a more intimate offer on the peninsula, 15-20 minutes by car.

Cotai Strip - Taipa

Airport area · About 1.5 km and 5 minutes by taxi from the terminal; many resorts also have free shuttles to the airport, taking 15-20 minutes with intermediate stops.

Best for: Travelers visiting for the casinos, shows and mega-resorts, who want the shortest possible transfer from the airport.

Pros
  • The shortest transfer anywhere in Macao: just minutes by taxi or shuttle from the terminal
  • Enormous resorts with dozens of restaurants, theaters and covered walkways connecting different hotels without stepping outside
Cons
  • An area built for casinos: outside the resorts there's little that isn't another casino
  • Reaching the Ruins of St. Paul's and the historic center still takes 15-20 minutes by taxi to the peninsula

Recommended hotels in this area

  • Four Seasons Hotel Macao: Some of the roomiest suites in Cotai, connected by walkway to the Venetian and the Londoner without going outside; a spa of over 2,700 sqm and its own casino, more intimate than the nearby mega-resorts.
  • Grand Hyatt Macau: Inside the City of Dreams complex, next to the House of Dancing Water theater; rooms with views of the Cotai skyline or the Cotai Strip itself.
  • Conrad Macao: Part of the Sands Cotai Central/The Londoner complex, with direct access to London-style covered streets and a large indoor shopping center.
  • St. Regis Macao: In the same Cotai Central complex, the only hotel in Macao with the St. Regis butler service included for every room, round the clock.
  • Grand Lisboa Palace Macau: The newest resort in Cotai (opened in 2021), with a Karl Lagerfeld-themed tower and a casino that echoes the style of the famous Grand Lisboa on the peninsula.

Macao Peninsula - historic center

Neighbourhood · About 5 km from the terminal; public bus AP1 every 10-13 minutes to the Border Gate and downtown, or 15-20 minutes by taxi crossing the bridge toward Cotai.

Best for: Travelers who want the Ruins of St. Paul's, the Portuguese streets of the historic center and a more intimate atmosphere than the Cotai mega-resorts.

Pros
  • The Ruins of St. Paul's, Senado Square and the rest of the UNESCO historic center are within walking distance of the area's hotels
  • An atmosphere closer to a Portuguese town, with fewer casinos of Cotai's scale
Cons
  • A longer transfer from the airport than to Cotai, especially by taxi during rush hour
  • Streets in the historic center are often narrow and pedestrian-only, not well suited for travelers with heavy luggage

Recommended hotels in this area

  • Sofitel Macau At Ponte 16: On the peninsula's historic waterfront, right next to the Ponte 16 area and just minutes' walk from the Ruins of St. Paul's.
  • Artyzen Grand Lapa Macau: Formerly a Mandarin Oriental, with large tropical gardens around the pool, rare given the peninsula's building density; near the NAPE area and Macau Tower.
  • Casa Real Hotel: A mid-range hotel on Avenida Comercial de Macau, in the NAPE area near the ferry terminal for Hong Kong; a convenient base for the historic center without Cotai resort prices.
