Madrid Barajas International Airport: where to stay, areas and recommended hotels

Madrid-Barajas is 20-30 minutes from the centre, and Metro Línea 8 reaches Nuevos Ministerios in 15 minutes, while the Exprés Aeropuerto serves the city at night too. The Spanish capital is therefore almost always chosen for the centre, even with a flight the next morning. Hotels in the airport area make sense for departures before 7 a.m. or a night arrival, and are reached by free shuttles. Mind the terminals: T1-T3 and T4 are separate and linked by a shuttle bus, so the hotel should be chosen knowing where you are departing from.

Airport area

Free shuttles to the terminals: a few minutes by car; the Hilton states about 5 minutes, the NH about 10.

Best for: Those leaving on a dawn flight or arriving late in the evening who want to avoid the centre.

Pros
  • Free shuttles; the NH runs them from 5:00 until half past midnight
  • On the morning of the flight you avoid traffic towards the M-40
  • International chains, with prices generally lower than in the centre
Cons
  • Before 5:00 the NH has no shuttle: a taxi is needed
  • Around you only roads and offices: for dinner or a stroll you have to go into the city
  • The centre of Madrid is about 15-30 minutes away, so sightseeing requires transport

Recommended hotels in this area

  • Hilton Madrid Airport: Free shuttle to the terminals and about 5 minutes from the airport, with the centre about 15 minutes away; a chain choice for frequent travellers.
  • NH Madrid Barajas Airport: Free shuttle every day from 5:00 until half past midnight; the website advises asking reception about early breakfasts.

  • The Exprés Aeropuerto runs 24 hours a day, useful even with a night flight
  • Theatres, restaurants and venues in the streets around Gran Vía

  • With suitcases the streets of the old centre are narrow and crowded

Pros
  • Metro L8 direct, with no changes, to the business district
  • Cercanías C1 links T4 with Chamartín and Atocha, useful for the AVE
  • The stretch from Nuevos Ministerios to the Bernabéu stadium area is served by line 10
