Molde Airport: where to stay, areas and recommended hotels

Molde airport, on the Årø peninsula, is just 5 km from the centre: a taxi takes about 10 minutes and costs around 290 NOK (25 €) for a ride of up to four people, with no need to book in advance. With distances this short there's no point looking for a hotel near the runway, where in any case no property exists: Molde itself is already the convenient choice, a compact city you can walk around in a few minutes and which greets visitors with the famous panorama of the 222 peaks surrounding the fjord.

Central Molde

City centre · Taxi Molde links the centre to Årø airport in about 10 minutes; there is no dedicated shuttle, but rides are available at the arrival of every flight or on call.

Best for: Any reason for travelling: in Molde the centre is the only real option, convenient both for city life and for the taxi back to the airport.

Pros
  • A compact centre: piers, shops and restaurants are all within walking distance in a few minutes
  • Direct taxis available at any time, without the waits typical of big cities
Cons
  • No organised airport shuttle: outside flight times you need to call a taxi
  • The hotels with the best fjord views are near the city stadium, 10-15 minutes on foot from the shopping street

  • Thon Hotel Moldefjord: On Storgata, in the heart of Molde and a short walk from the Storkaia pier where the Hurtigruten ships dock; the fjord-facing rooms look towards the 222 peaks of the city panorama.
  • Scandic Alexandra Molde: A hotel opened in 1883 and taken over by Scandic in 2023, right in the city centre; 120 of the 165 rooms have a balcony over the fjord, while the old lounges called 'Stuene' preserve their period furnishings and host breakfast.
