Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport: where to stay, areas and recommended hotels
Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport is located in Plaine Magnien, in the south-eastern corner of Mauritius, far from both the capital Port Louis (48 km, 45-60 minutes by car) and the two most popular tourist coastlines: Grand Baie to the north is over an hour away, Flic en Flac to the west almost as far. For this reason most visitors book directly in their chosen holiday area, in the north, the west or along the south-eastern bay, rather than near the terminal. Port Louis remains the most sensible base for those staying in the city for work, for the central market or for the Caudan Waterfront, planning to head to the coast afterwards; those with just a short layover, however, will find very little within an hour's drive of the airport in any direction.
Port Louis, the capital
City centre · About 48 km from the airport, 45-60 minutes by taxi or car depending on traffic on the M1; there is no direct train or bus to the centre.
Best for: Those staying for work or for a stopover in the city before heading to the tourist coasts of the north or west.
Pros
- Central market, Caudan Waterfront and the Chinatown district within walking distance of the centre
- Convenient base for those who need to sort out paperwork or meetings in the city before reaching the coasts
Cons
- The beaches and resorts of the north (Grand Baie, over an hour) and the west (Flic en Flac, about an hour) remain far away
- Away from the main streets, the city empties out early in the evening
Recommended hotels in this area
- Champ de Mars B&B: A few steps from the central market and the Champ de Mars racecourse, on Frere Felix de Valois Street in the heart of Port Louis; airport transfer on request, about 34 minutes from the terminal.
- Casa LeValois - Hidden Garden Oasis in Port-Louis: Holiday home of about 60 sqm with a hidden inner garden, 1.1 km from the centre of Port Louis; two bedrooms, suited to a couple or two people travelling together.
