Soekarno-Hatta International Airport: where to stay, areas and recommended hotels
Soekarno-Hatta International Airport: where to stay, areas and recommended hotels
Soekarno-Hatta is Jakarta's large international hub, but it is located in Tangerang, 20-30 km west of the city: there is no real cluster of hotels next to the terminals, so the choice is between staying a bit closer on the north side (Kemayoran) or going all the way to the Thamrin and Senayan centre. In either case, traffic decides everything: by taxi it takes anywhere from 45 minutes to over 2 hours depending on the time, while the Railink train reaches BNI City station in about 45 minutes with no surprises. Anyone with an early morning flight does well to budget for traffic, not just distance in kilometres.
Kemayoran, the closest to the ring road
Neighbourhood · About 28-32 km from the airport via the Jakarta Inner Toll Road (JORR) ring road: 35-40 minutes without traffic, which easily become 60-90 at rush hour; DAMRI buses connect the airport to Kemayoran for about 40,000 IDR.
Best for: Those who want to stay as close as possible to the airport without going all the way to the Thamrin city centre.
Pros
- Closer to the airport than the Thamrin or Senayan centre
- Fast-growing area with recent chain hotels and the Jakarta International Expo fairground
Cons
- District built for trade fairs and offices, little evening street life outside the hotels
- Reaching the historic centre or Thamrin still takes 20-30 minutes by taxi
Recommended hotels in this area
- DoubleTree by Hilton Jakarta Kemayoran: A 5-star property with club-level lounge access and free breakfast for executive guests; outdoor pool and meeting rooms for business travellers near the Jakarta International Expo.
- Grand Mercure Jakarta Kemayoran: A 15-minute walk from the Jakarta International Expo, with a full spa, outdoor pool and a restaurant overlooking the garden.

Thamrin and Senayan, the city centre
City centre · About 25-30 km from the airport: 45-90 minutes by taxi depending on traffic, or the Railink train to BNI City station (Sudirman Baru) in about 45 minutes, then a few minutes on foot or by metro to Thamrin.
Best for: Those who want shopping, restaurants and city life within walking distance, accepting the longest transfer from the airport.
Pros
- Bundaran HI, Plaza Indonesia and Grand Indonesia within walking distance of the Thamrin hotels
- Bundaran HI MRT station close by, useful for getting around without a taxi
Cons
- The trip from the airport is the longest and most exposed to traffic among Jakarta's areas
- Room prices higher than in Kemayoran or the outlying districts
Recommended hotels in this area
- Hotel Indonesia Kempinski Jakarta: Right on Bundaran HI, connected to the Grand Indonesia mall and a few steps from Plaza Indonesia; skyline views from the highest rooms.
- Grand Hyatt Jakarta: In the Plaza Indonesia complex on Jalan MH Thamrin, with direct access to offices, embassies and malls; recently renovated hotel.
- Fairmont Jakarta: In the Senayan district, facing the golf course; 488 rooms and suites, often chosen by those working in the Senayan trade fair and convention area.
