Sulaymaniyah International Airport: where to stay, areas and recommended hotels

Sulaymaniyah Airport is just 10-15 minutes by taxi from the city centre, with no regular public transport link. Hotel options are almost all concentrated on Salim Street and the nearby streets of the centre: for daytime flights the centre is almost always the better choice, with shops, restaurants and the Slemani Museum within easy reach. The exceptions are the Grand Millennium and the Millennium Kurdistan, both outside the city on the ring road: designed more for those seeking an isolated resort with pool and spa than for those who want to walk around the centre in the evening.

Salim Street and the centre

City centre · About 10-15 minutes by taxi from the airport; no regular bus or train covers the route.

Best for: Those who want the museum, shops and restaurants of the centre within walking distance, with the airport still just a few taxi minutes away.

Pros
  • Salim Street, the Slemani Museum and Mawlawi Market reachable on foot from hotels in the area
  • Shorter taxi transfer than the out-of-town properties
Cons
  • No public transport: a taxi is needed even to reach the airport
  • Central area, so traffic and noise on the main roads during the day

Recommended hotels in this area

  • Copthorne Hotel Baranan: On Sarchinar Main Street, 5 minutes from the Salim Street commercial district and 10 minutes from the airport; one of the most central hotels for those who want to get around on foot during the day.
  • Slemani Rotana: Less than a km from the Grand Mosque of Sulaymaniyah and a few minutes from the civic museum; indoor pool and sauna among the amenities most mentioned in reviews.

The ring road outside the city

Nearby town · 20-25 minutes by taxi from the airport and 15-25 minutes from the centre, depending on the property; no public transport here either.

Best for: Those looking for a resort with pool and spa who don't need to walk to the centre, perhaps with a rental car.

Pros
  • Indoor pools, spa and larger rooms than the hotels in the centre
  • Less traffic and noise than the central streets
Cons
  • A taxi is always needed for the centre and the museum, 15-25 minutes depending on the property
  • Residential area with little to do on foot in the evening

Recommended hotels in this area

  • Grand Millennium Sulaimani: On Bakhtiary Street, about 25 minutes from the airport with a shuttle available on request; indoor and outdoor pools, spa and several in-house restaurants.
  • Millennium Kurdistan Hotel & Spa: On the Malik Mahmud ring road, about 20 minutes from the airport and 15 from the centre; recently opened, with indoor pool and gym.
