What to check the night before your flight: the evening ritual
The evening before departure deserves a distinct physical ritual separate from the logistic checks already done in previous days: clothes ready, suitcase nearly closed and alarms set, not rechecked for the umpteenth time.
Clothes and luggage
Choosing and laying out ready the clothes for the next day eliminates any decision to make under pressure the following morning. The suitcase should already be complete at that point, leaving out only items used daily until morning — toothbrush, pajamas, contact lenses — ideally collected in a separate small overnight bag, so you don't have to rummage through already-closed baggage.
Alarms and morning organization
Setting multiple alarms, on different devices when possible, reduces the risk that an unforeseen technical issue — a dead battery, muted volume — compromises waking up on the most delicate day of the trip. When travelling with family, involving other members in this shared ritual distributes the organizational load instead of leaving it to one person.
The moment before sleep
Once these steps are completed, a moment of relaxation without further organizational thoughts promotes better sleep quality, useful for facing the travel day clear-headed. The sequence of the last minutes before leaving home instead remains a separate check, to be done the day of departure itself.
The most useful step is setting the alarm on at least two different devices the evening before, not the morning itself: it's the simplest way to remove the most banal risk, a technical glitch, at a time when you no longer have time to fix it.
