Lion Air: Indonesia's Largest Network, the Boeing Fleet and the Reputation on Punctuality
Founded in 1999 by Rusdi Kirana, Lion Air is today Indonesia's largest private airline by fleet and network, the head of a group that also includes Batik Air, Wings Air, Thai Lion Air and Malindo Air, with its main base at Jakarta Soekarno-Hatta.
History and positioning
Born in 1999 in a newly liberalized Indonesian market, Lion Air grew rapidly until it became a true multi-brand group. The name also remains tied to a dramatic episode: flight JT610, which crashed near Jakarta in October 2018, one of the two accidents that led to the global grounding of the Boeing 737 MAX.
The fleet
The parent airline mainly operates Boeing 737-800s and 737 MAX 8s, while long-haul flying is entrusted to the subsidiary Batik Air with Airbus A330s. The group as a whole has hundreds of aircraft across its various brands.
Routes and network
Besides the Jakarta base, Lion Air operates secondary hubs at Denpasar, Surabaya and Medan, with an extremely extensive domestic network among the Indonesian islands and regional connections to Singapore and Malaysia, plus Umrah charter flights to Saudi Arabia.
Fares and baggage
The model remains low-cost with aggressive fares on the main domestic routes: checked baggage and seat selection are separate items, while the base fare aims to be the lowest available on many domestic legs.
What passengers say
- Most often cited strengths: very competitive prices and the country's broadest domestic network, useful for reaching minor destinations with no alternatives.
- Recurring criticisms: frequent delays on domestic routes and an international reputation still shaped by the years when several Indonesian carriers, including Lion Air, were excluded from EU airspace for safety reasons, before the ban was lifted in 2018.
The ideal profile is someone flying Indonesian domestic routes where price matters more than guaranteed punctuality. It is not the right choice for those with a tight connection right after arrival. The practical tip: always leave a wide margin between a Lion Air flight and any onward connection, especially on domestic routes with multiple stops.
