European and low-cost flights: the 4-8 week window

For domestic and European routes operated by full-service airlines, the most convenient period remains between 4 and 8 weeks before departure. On routes of low-cost carriers, where the price increases almost daily as seats fill up, the useful window narrows to around 5-6 weeks: beyond that threshold, the risk of paying the highest fare increases rapidly.

Long-haul flights: why the window extends to 6 months

On long-range routes, the number of seats to fill is much higher and airlines distribute the lowest fares over a wider timeframe, typically between 2 and 6 months before departure. Booking beyond six months rarely provides additional savings compared to doing so three or four months in advance.

Holidays: why it's worth booking even earlier

For Christmas flights, for example, booking in a window of 8-12 weeks before departure allows you to save on average between 20% and 35% compared to purchasing in the two or three weeks immediately preceding. The same principle—book ahead when seasonal demand is predictable—applies to New Year's and the peak summer season, when demand grows faster than availability.

Low-demand routes: the advantage of waiting

On off-season or low-demand routes, the opposite dynamic applies: airlines tend to discount remaining unsold seats in the final weeks, and it's here that waiting, instead of booking early, can benefit those with flexible dates.

For a European flight, mark on your calendar the 6-week threshold before departure and from that point activate a price monitoring alert on the route, instead of checking the fare manually every day.
