Yangon International Airport: where to stay, areas and recommended hotels

Yangon airport is in the Mingalardone district, 15 km from downtown but up to an hour by taxi at rush hour between Sule Pagoda and Chinatown: a hotel just minutes from the terminal avoids the traffic altogether for those with only a layover. Those staying for the city gain a lot by moving toward Strand Road and the colonial centre, or toward the green districts around Kandawgyi and Inya lakes, quieter and home to the city's historic luxury hotels.

Mingalardone, a step from the terminal

At the airport · K.C Residence is about a minute's drive or 12 minutes on foot from the terminal, on Radio Station Road in the same district as the airport.

Best for: Short layovers and dawn departures, when you want to avoid the traffic toward downtown altogether.

Pros
  • No risk from traffic, which during rush hour can push the trip downtown to an hour
  • Almost a walk away: useful for those with a very early flight or a layover of just a few hours
Cons
  • Around it only the airport area: for dinner you stay in the hotel
  • For the historic centre or the lakes you still need 30-60 minutes by taxi depending on the time

Recommended hotels in this area

  • K.C Residence: On Radio Station Road in the Mingalardone district, about a minute's drive from the terminal: the closest property to the airport among the candidates, built for short layovers.

Strand Road and the colonial centre

Neighbourhood · 15 km from the airport, 30 minutes outside traffic but up to an hour during the morning and late-afternoon rush; taxi fare around 8-10 dollars.

Best for: Those who want Sule Pagoda, the British colonial buildings and the riverfront within walking distance, accepting a longer transfer from the airport.

Pros
  • Sule Pagoda, the British colonial buildings and Yangon's riverfront within walking distance
  • The part of the city with the greatest concentration of restaurants, bars and evening life
Cons
  • The transfer from the airport is the city's longest and least predictable
  • Traffic and crowded pavements make walking slow during the busiest hours

Recommended hotels in this area

  • The Strand, Yangon: An 1901 hotel on Strand Road, a member of Leading Hotels of the World, renovated in 2016: the best-known symbol of the colonial era in Yangon, overlooking the river.
  • The ERAVATI Sule Grand Yangon: Opened in 2025 in the 1927 building that was once the colonial High Court, on Strand Road: it takes over from the Rosewood Yangon project, never completed under that brand, keeping the building's original features.

Best for: Those who prefer the greenery and quiet of the large hotels near the lakes over neighbourhood life, with Shwedagon just minutes away.

Pros
  • Shwedagon Pagoda 5-10 minutes by car from the hotels on Kandawgyi
  • Large parks and bodies of water instead of downtown traffic, ideal for resting between engagements
Cons
  • Few restaurants or shops within walking distance: in the evening you depend on the hotel or a taxi
  • Not the right area for those who want the colonial centre's nightlife
