Yogyakarta International Airport: where to stay, areas and recommended hotels
Yogyakarta International Airport (YIA), opened in 2019 in Kulon Progo, replaced the old Adisutjipto airport, which was almost inside the city: YIA instead sits 40-45 km from the centre, with 1-1.5 hours by car depending on traffic. Some online Booking listings still use the old airport's name ('near Adisutjipto'): for anyone flying into YIA today, those properties are actually in the city, not near the new airport. The airport train connects YIA to Yogyakarta station in 35-40 minutes and is the most reliable option for those who don't want to risk traffic on the road to Malioboro.
At the airport, Kulon Progo
Airport area · Both hotels are about 5 minutes by car from the terminal, in the Temon district; neither is within walking distance of the gates.
Best for: Early morning flights or one-night stopovers, when you don't want to make the trip to the city in both directions.
Pros
- 5 minutes from the terminal, useful for those arriving late or departing very early
- Completely avoids the 1-1.5 hour trip to Yogyakarta city
Cons
- Only the airport service area around: for dinner you stay at the hotel
- Malioboro or the temples of Prambanan and Borobudur still require the long transfer
Recommended hotels in this area
- Novotel Yogyakarta International Airport Kulon Progo: 5 minutes by car from the YIA terminal, in the Temon commercial district; 194 rooms, all-day dining restaurant, pool and gym.
- ibis Yogyakarta International Airport Kulon Progo: A budget option 5 minutes from the terminal, with soundproofed 18-24 sqm rooms, rain shower and smart TV; 224 rooms.

Yogyakarta city, Malioboro and Tugu
City centre · About 40-45 km from the airport: 1-1.5 hours by car depending on traffic, or the airport train to Yogyakarta station in about 35-40 minutes, from which Malioboro is a short walk away.
Best for: Those who want Malioboro, the Keraton and the city's museums within walking distance, accepting the real 1-1.5 hour transfer from YIA.
Pros
- Malioboro, the Tugu Monument and the Keraton within walking distance of the area's hotels
- The airport train makes the transfer predictable, without the risk of traffic on the road to Kulon Progo
Cons
- Any hotel in the city still requires 35 minutes by train or 1-1.5 hours by car to and from the airport
- The Malioboro area is very touristy and crowded, especially on weekends
Recommended hotels in this area
- Novotel Suites Yogyakarta Malioboro: A few steps from Malioboro and Yogyakarta railway station, near the Tugu Monument and the Keraton; rooftop pool with views of Mount Merapi and Merbabu.
- Hotel Santika Premiere Jogja: Near the Tugu Monument, the city's historic landmark; convenient for those who want to stay in the heart of Yogyakarta without the prices of the big international brands.
- Yogyakarta Marriott Hotel: An upscale hotel on Ringroad Utara, in Condong Catur: a little outside the heart of Malioboro but convenient for conferences and for those arriving by car from the airport.
