Air Montenegro: The New National Carrier Born in the Middle of the Pandemic
Established on February 8, 2021 by the Montenegrin government to take up the legacy of the bankrupt Montenegro Airlines, Air Montenegro began scheduled flights just four months later, on June 10, 2021. It operates from both of the country's airports, Podgorica and Tivat, as the flag carrier of Montenegro.
History and positioning
The launch in the middle of the pandemic, with only one aircraft available in the first year, made the airline's start unusually fast for a national carrier rebuilt from scratch. Subsequent growth has been gradual but steady.
The fleet
From the initial single Embraer E195, the fleet has grown to two E195s, with an Airbus A320 leased in the summer months to cope with higher seasonal demand.
Routes and network
The first destinations were Belgrade, served from both Podgorica and Tivat, followed by Ljubljana, Banja Luka and, from mid-July 2021, Frankfurt. The network remains oriented toward the Balkans and Germany, with no intercontinental links of its own.
It is useful for those who need a direct link between Podgorica or Tivat and the main Balkan cities or Germany. It is not suited to those looking for a direct intercontinental flight from Montenegro, a network the airline does not offer. A practical tip: in the summer months always check which of the two airports, Podgorica or Tivat, your flight actually leaves from, because several seasonal routes are operated from only one of the two.
