Air Peace: How Nigeria's Largest Airline Is Becoming an Intercontinental Carrier

Founded in 2013 by Nigerian entrepreneur Allen Onyema, Air Peace is today the airline with the largest share of domestic traffic in Nigeria, with its hub at Murtala Muhammed Airport in Lagos. Born as a purely national carrier, over the past two years it has embarked on aggressive intercontinental expansion, positioning itself as the first private Nigerian carrier able to compete on long-haul routes historically dominated by foreign airlines.

The fleet

Domestic and regional operations rely on a fleet of Boeing 737s alongside Embraer E145s and E170s for the thinner regional routes. The real turning point is long-haul: between 2024 and August 2025 the airline received four Boeing 777-200ERs dedicated exclusively to intercontinental services, a leap in scale that no other private Nigerian carrier had ever attempted.

Routes and network

The domestic network remains dense around Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, Kano and dozens of other Nigerian cities, with multiple daily frequencies on the main routes. Internationally, the 777s have opened services to London (Heathrow on Friday, Saturday and Sunday from late October 2025, Gatwick on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday), Dubai, Johannesburg, Guangzhou, Houston and Mumbai, a network aimed at reducing Nigerian travelers' dependence on European or Gulf transit hubs.

On board and service

On the newly introduced 777s the cabin offers the Business and Economy classes typical of long-haul flying, with catering that includes Nigerian cuisine options alongside international menus, designed for a mixed clientele of diaspora and business travelers.

What passengers say

  • Most frequently cited strengths: being the first Nigerian airline to offer direct flights to destinations such as London and Houston with no European or Middle Eastern stopover.
  • Most frequent criticisms: not-uncommon delays on the domestic network at peak hours and slow handling times for ticket changes or refunds through customer service.

Air Peace is an effective choice for those flying within Nigeria on routes where the airline offers more daily frequencies than the competition, and for those now looking for a direct intercontinental connection without going through a European or Gulf hub. It is less suitable for anyone with a tight connection on the domestic network, where delays remain a real risk at times of heavier traffic.

If you book one of the new intercontinental flights, check the arrival terminal in London carefully: Heathrow and Gatwick are served on different days of the week, and mixing them up can make you miss a connection you arranged on your own.
